Paper 1

Dear all,

This is what I went through on Monday. I hope you will not commit the same mistakes again on Wednesday. Good Luck! ",)

Paper 1

Common mistakes for situation writing

Lack of salutation
informal signing off - love, your friend
formal signing off – Regards, Yours sincerely, Yours truly,
no contraction
Feeling word – happy , depressed not “I cannot wait for the trip”
Do not miss out any points so that you can score full marks (6m) for content
Stating Date
Given: 27 October 2007
So, …
27 October 2007 (√)
27th of October 2007 (√)

27th October 2007 (X)
27 Oct 2007 (X)
27 Oct 07 (X)

Keep everything to the left
Eg of a diary entry

Date: 22 April 2008

Dear Diary,

Xxxxxx

Love,
Alice

To score higher marks, you have to consider your audience and think what is the most appropriate thing to say to your targeted audience

For example, if your friend was absent from school because he was sick, you could ask how he was feeling, hope he recover soon, hope that he has a speedy recovery.

For example, if your friend was absent from school because he was away for tournament, you could ask about his tournament, wish him good luck etc

Composition

You get to choose to write on either a picture composition or a situational composition.

Picture Composition

It is very important to look at the picture closely and include the scene (the picture) in one part of your story. For example, the one on shoplifting, you cannot mention that there is no one in the shop as the picture shows a few people.

For fire, many of you missed the helicopter which dropped the rope ladder to save the trapped victims.

You can take on the role of anyone in the picture. You can use first person or third person account. If you use third person account, you have to be consistent with it.

Essence of a story:
setting – where, when, who, what, why, how
main characters – many of you did not include a main character in your story. Some only used the phrases that I have provided. This creates a very cold report not even a story as a story has at least one main character. That is why most scored poorly.
No emotions

Situational writing

I was travelling in an MRT train when it came to a sudden stop. The next minute, I found myself in total darkness.

** Must be FIRST-PERSON account
** Third-person account downgraded by 1 band in content

Use past tense
No contractions are allowed except in dialogue
Try starting your composition interestingly. Please try not to start with “One fine day” or “One sunny day” etc

The Power Of Listening

Talk less and listen more :)

A Saam's Tale (Finland)
Source: Retold by Elaine L. Lindy, ©2006. All rights reserved.

ONE DAY, in the land above the Arctic Circle where the Saams and the Lapps live, a young Saam youth named Sergevan ventured on a hunting trip. After three days his food supplies were nearly gone and no deer had been found. Having no better idea, when he noticed an overgrown path, he followed it.

The path led deep into the woods to a hut, and sitting on its front step was a very old woman. She looked up. "Peur?" she said in a raspy voice as he approached. "What?" said the young man. "That's the name of my great-great-great grandfather." "You look just like him," said the old woman.

"I was supposed to marry your great-great-great grandfather - oh, the memories of my Peur from so long ago!" The old woman coughed and Sergevan offered her what was left of his food and drink. Since she had no teeth, she gnawed and sucked on his crust of bread and jam. "Why didn't the two of you marry, if you don't mind my asking?" said Sergevan after awhile.

"I might as well tell you," said the old woman. "Always he took the other side! If I said it was raining, he said it was snowing. If I said it was hot in the tupa, he said it was cold. If I said to go right, he went left. Oh, Peur, Peur! - what a life we would have had if only you had listened to me at least some of the time!"

The old woman noticed Sergevan's hunting arrows and supplies and empty bag. "You must be far from home. You're welcome to stay here tonight. Have you had no luck hunting?"

"There's no deer anywhere!" said Sergevan. "I've looked and looked."

"There's plenty of deer," said the old woman. "You just need to know how to look. Your great-great-great grandfather used to lure the deer by singing. When he stole up to the deer, he'd come so that the wind blew at his back. Now, that's why your great-great-great-grandfather . . ."

In a flash, Sergevan grabbed his bows and arrows and bolted back into the tundra. By the end of that day he returned to the old woman's hut, empty-handed. He didn't want to be unkind to an old woman, but in his heart he felt angry she had given him wrong advice.

"I came back to tell you that your advice did not work," he said, grim-faced.

"You are just like your great-great-great-grandfather!" said the old woman. "He never listened to me either! Now if you had only let me finish what I was saying, I would have said that he'd come up to the deer with the wind at his back and that's why he . . . wasn't a good hunter! When the wind is at your back the deer catches a whiff of human scent and runs away. The wind must be blowing toward your face, so the human scent blows away from the deer. And singing only tells them that you're there - you must be absolutely silent."

"Ah!" said Sergevan. "I'll go back to the tundra now."

"Not now - not at night!" said the old woman. "Sleep here and leave at daybreak, that's the best time to go hunting."

When dawn broke, Sergevan headed back to the tundra. He silently crept up on a deer while the wind was blowing on his face and sent a single arrow flying. Later that day, he and the old woman feasted on his game.

"You are almost like family to me," Sergevan said. "Why don't you come live with my family?"

"I could have been your great-great-great grandmother," said she. "But you know, when they get old, all animals stay at their nest or cave. I will stay here."

"Then I will stay with you," said the youth.

And so Sergevan and the old woman lived for a number of happy years in her hut with plenty to eat and plenty to talk about.

Haiku Competition

To those who are taking part in Haiku Competition,

Some notes on Haiku:

Haiku is a poetic form and a type of poetry from the Japanese culture. Usually they use simple words and grammar. The most common form for Haiku is three short lines. The first line usually contains five (5) syllables, the second line seven (7) syllables, and the third line contains five (5) syllables. Haiku doesn't rhyme. A Haiku must "paint" a mental image in the reader's mind. This is the challenge of Haiku - to put the poem's meaning and imagery in the reader's mind in ONLY 17 syllables over just three (3) lines of poetry!

An example of Haiku
Daffodils in bloom
Children playing together
Happy as can be

Dictation Matters

Dear children,

The unseen dictation is going on as planned on the coming Monday, 4 Feb.

For next Monday, 11 Feb 08, please learn the following dictation.

"I rummaged through my bag for my purple purse. My fingers were trembling. I shook it violently, a soft tinkling noise came from within. I opened the purse with slow trepidation and tipped the contents out. Two five-cent coins landed on my palms. I let out an audible sigh as my shoulders sagged in defeat. My face was contorted in intense anguish. Beads of cold sweat tickled down my temple. The coins seemed to be laughing at me. I clenched my fist to hide the smug face of the coins."

Look at how a former P5/1 pupil wrote her composition. How she shows and not tells. There are a few good phrases that you can learn from her.

Thank you.

Drowsy,
Miss Lee

Interesting Information on cells

1. Not all plant cells have chlorophyll. For example, the scale leaves of an onion do not have chlorophyll.

2. Not all cells look alike. Compare cheek cells, red blood cell and nerve cell.

Click here to see Cell Pictures

3. A cell can survive on its own. That is why it is the basic unit of life.

Vacuole in a Plant cell

CELL SAP VACUOLE
The cell sap vacuole in plants is much larger than animals. In plant cells the vacuoles are usually large and permament and have the same function. In addition to storing important substances, it also helps support the plant. The pressure of water filling the cell vacuole pushes out against the cell wall. This gives the wall enough strength to hold up fairly large green plants. We all know the first indication that we are not giving our house plants enough water. They start to droop or wilt. Now you know who, so keep that cell sap vacuole filled with water.

Help needed

Dear children,

As part of the Use Your Hands Campaign, our class has to decorate our noticeboard with photographs of you and your classmates cleaning the classroom.

I have taken the photos and I need two favours from anyone:

1. To print the words "Use Your Hands Campaign" in colour and font size of 150.
2. To print out the photos in colour on a A4 size normal paper - I have 18 photographs so maybe 1 person can help to print one.

Let me know if you can help. Thank you!
